Self portrait

While visiting the art gallery I asked if they had any self portraits, the woman at the desk said she did not think so.  I took it upon myself to look around and found the 3 I downloaded.  Unfortunately, the information I took about them can not be found.  I do know that the first 2 pictures are of the same artist in 2 different forms.  I remember reading about it. The third is famous for the woman with the cow in the bathtub.  Finally I downloaded one of my favorites of myself, I was going to Halloween party as a hippie chick, this is a good side of me.  I like to be free and have fun even at my old age and I recently just lost 68 lbs. and am feeling pretty good about myself.

 I found that the other self portraits I downloaded look gloomy almost sad, maybe the artist was portraying her mood, In my portrait obviously my mood is portrayed as upbeat, and girls just want to have fun. The elements in my piece has pattern and color. I think this was good I know that I did not draw myself, I tried but it was not working pictures are better.

Article critiqueing

I selected Welcome to Wonderland first because of the title, it caught my curiousity, then once I click on it to download the bright vibrant blue color opening is more intriguing. A challenge I found picking one was they were all so good and I was not quite sure how to critique without being to harsh. I guess it was harder than I thought because I am not an expert.
I would like to see what my peers say about my slideshow so I know how to make things better. I did enjoy working on this project it was interesting to see everyone else's projects and ideas.

Video Blog Review

Criticism has been here for many years, it was interesting to see just how many things are criticized in everyday life.  Not only do we have the criticism of music, films,movies and art as stated in the video Critics:Stories from the inside  pages. We as people criticize all the time, look what happens in the real life with people in the media, they even have a show called "Fashion Police". Clement Greenberg said that writing about and criticising art is harder than music, but he really doen't say why. It doesn't seem that some art critics favor Pollack I was getting mixed feelings from each of the videos on how the critics may felt about his work, or I should say they have mixed thoughts.
     I was finding myself criticizing art when going to the art gallery in many forms we learned about, but sometimes I would look at something and wonder WOW why did this painting make it to the gallery or I could of done that. I guess the films relate to the project in ways that we look and take a painting apart whether it is abstract or what expression  if  any is the artist saying.I think being a critic is hard, your tearing things apart at times but I guess that is what it is all about.

Module Project4

This was a great project for me, I enjoyed looking at the different art works in connection to the Civil War.  At first I was not sure how I was going to do it or what to do it on. I guess I did not fully understand what was expected of us.  I was under the impression we were suppose to use one artist, then realized we could use multiple as long as it was in the theme realm.
I even went back to the art gallery to look around again especially at Kara Walker Series.  The other photos of paintings I was able to locate on line.and some were a little harder than others. Unfortuneately I was not able to get the exact years or sizes.

Module 13

I never knew that there was something called lowbrow or highbrow art.  It looked to me that this type of art is what began in comic books many years ago.  I think that this type of art was getting an unfair judgement call, after all it carries many elements of art.  In Bones of Contention video was the one I liked the most, although it was sad it was interesting.  Genocide is not only a part of history it still happens in this modern day. It is amazing that bones can be identified and brings some peace to native families that wonder what happened to them.  Modernists ideas have brought organization to museums. I do not think Albright Knox Gallery does chronological order like Tate museum, or I should say I did not pay attention to that, but wish I would of because I think all museums should be that way.
 I was a little taken to find out that Phillippe de Montabello painting brought so much attention, I guess it leaves alot to your imagination. He was very talented. I am not sure if any of these videos have given me any ideas for my project.

Module 12

1.I chose Abstract Expressionism and Pop art of the 50's and 60's and Andy Warhol because this was more of the time I was born.  Most of art that we have been studying has been involving artist from many many years ago before our time.It was interesting or I could relate more to the era.
2. In the first film I watched I did not know that melted bees was is used by Jasper John, over newspaper when creatinng The Flag painting, and there is so much abstract and colors in the paintings shown, by Helen Frankenhaler and William de Koonins; his painting Morning the Spring which he can relate his Long Island home.  I also realized that Rauschenber and Warhol brought Hollywood to our view with their silk screening and I did not know that Andy Warhol played a major role in silk screening and commercial illustrations or that he was the first artist to bring Marily Monroe and Liz Taylor enormous head shots to us.Taking this pictures  and enlarging them beyond extreme made him famous and it was brilliant for advertising. There are many steps to silkscreening I was not aware of. Andy Warhol was able to meet many famous icons from Hollywood which is very interesting.
3. Making mass  production of objects and images in the Pop culture relates well in the textbook and videos. Explaining about Andy Warhol and how he brought so many paintings to life is pretty much very similar.  The abstract generation and its artists have a definate connection with the films also.
4. Like I mentioned before I was able to relate to these videos more that others. From the ones that I chose were familar that I have seen them while growing up. There is a better understanding from the commercialized and mass production that occurred during this time especially from the silk screening aspect of it.

Module 11

1. The 1st painting is by Henri Matisse, called La Musique,1937. This is 2 spanish women enjoying a afternoon, it reminds me of Cubism period we were learning about. Very bold colors and emphasis on the women breasts being outlined, symbolizing expressionism.

2. Painting 2 is Smoke, by Fernand Leger,1912. I love this one it has contempory and geometric all over it, along with color and even some charcoal effect.

3. This sculpture by Lee Bontecou,untitled made with welded steel canvas on wire. I did not see this exhibit last time I was there, it is very interesting it looks like a 3D eyeball to me. It has very dark colors.

4. I know I was only suppose to enter 3 photos but I ran into the Emancipaton Approximation by Kara Walker. This consisted of 2 hall ways with Black and white silhouettes. It was telling the story of Abraham Lincolns Slavery, some were vulgar,even brutal and funny. This was more historical and was telling a story.

  When going through the Albright Knox Art Gallery I found out that many of the paintings on the outside perimeter walls most stay maybe move around but may never go. The walls are all a bright off white color with many rows of recessed lights, when looking at the contempory paintings they had lights all in one row pointing right at the paintings illuminating them. The movement is very orgainized and areas seem to have paintings of similar size in same area, and the very anormous paintings with similar size. Framing is different on paintings geared to the era, or culture. The different styles of framing goes with the painters preference that may make connect with their painting.
